Despite the tension within the coalition government about committing to a net-zero target, Queensland coal belt leaders are already planning for a low carbon future.
In Gladstone, Queensland's largest multi-commodity port, serious plans are underway to transform the precinct into a major global hydrogen hub with accompanying service and manufacturing industries.
"I think we can be exporting hydrogen in the next couple of years, absolutely, it's moving that fast, it is going to happen," Gladstone Mayor Matt Burnett said.
