Optus Mobile agrees to $100m fine for taking advantage of vulnerable consumers

Optus Mobile faces a $100 million penalty after the Singapore-owned company admitted to engaging in unconscionable conduct, encouraging vulnerable people - including First Nations Australians in remote areas - to buy telecommunications goods and services they did not need.


Optus has agreed to the fine, subject to court approval, for the conduct when selling to hundreds of consumers, many of whom did not want or need, could not use or could not afford what they were sold, and in some cases consumers were pursued for debts resulting from these sales.
